Compression test – Determining the compressive strength of packaging

The compression test is used to determine the resistance of packaging to vertical compressive forces. It is used to evaluate the stability of packaging under realistic storage and transport conditions.

The test can be performed in two ways: with continuously increasing force at a constant feed rate or with constant force applied over a defined period of time.

The aim of the test is either to determine the maximum load capacity or to check a specified load limit value (target value).

To determine the maximum load capacity, the packaging is loaded until significant deformation or structural damage occurs. This results in the highest compressive force that the packaging can withstand without losing its protective function.

Testing up to a defined target value is usually carried out as part of standardized performance evaluation of transport packaging, for example in accordance with ASTM D4169. The aim of this standard is to test packaging systems under realistic conditions before they are used in the actual transport process.
